The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck is a children'sbook written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. Potter composed thebook at Hill Top, a working farm in the Lake District she bought in1905. Following the purchase, her works began to focus on countryand village life, incorporating large casts of animal charactersand sinister villains. Jemima Puddle-Duck was the first of herbooks set wholly at the farm with background illustrations based onthe farm buildings and yard, and nearby locales.Jemima is a domestic duck whose eggs are routinely confiscatedby the farmer's wife because she believes Jemima a poor sitter.Jemima searches for a place away from the farm where she can hatchher eggs without human interference, and naively confides her woesto a suave fox who invites her to nest in a shed at his home.Jemima accepts his invitation, little realizing her danger: the foxplans to kill and roast her. Kep, a collie on the farm, discoversJemima's whereabouts and rescues her just in time. Potter indicatedthe tale was a revision of "Little Red Riding Hood" with Jemima,the fox, and the dog parallels to the fairy tale's heroine, wolf,and woodcutter. Jemima, Kep, the farmer's wife and her two childrenwere all modelled on real world individuals at Potter's Hill Topfarm.

Brockkidnaps the children of Benjamin Bunny and his wife Flopsy,intending to eat them, and hides them in an oven in the home of Mr.Tod. Benjamin and his cousin Peter Rabbit have followed Tommy Brockin an attempt to rescue the babies. When Mr. Tod finds Brock asleepin his bed, he determines to get him out of the house. His initialattempt fails, and the two eventually come to blows. Under cover ofthe fight, the rabbits rescue the baby rabbits. The tale wasinfluenced by the Uncle Remus stories, and was set in the fields ofPotter's Castle Farm. Black and white illustrations outnumber thosein colour. The tale is critically considered one of Potter's "mostcomplex and successful in plot and tone."

The Tailor of Gloucester is a children's bookwritten and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The story is about atailor whose work on a waistcoat is finished by the grateful micehe rescues from his cat and was based on a real world incidentinvolving a tailor and his assistants. For years, Potter declaredthat of all her books it was her personal favourite.A tailor in Gloucester sends his cat Simpkin to buy food and atwist of cherry-coloured silk to complete a waistcoat commissionedby the mayor for his wedding on Christmas morning. While Simpkin isgone, the tailor finds mice the cat has imprisoned under teacups.The mice are released and scamper away. When Simpkin returns andfinds his mice gone, he hides the twist in anger.The tailor falls ill and is unable to complete the waistcoat,but, upon returning to his shop, he is surprised to find thewaistcoat finished. The work has been done by the grateful mice.However, one buttonhole remains unfinished because there was "nomore twist!" Simpkin gives the tailor the twist to complete thework and the success of the waistcoat makes the tailor'sfortune.

Mrs. Tittlemouse is a tale in which no humansplay a part and one in which events are treated as though they haveoccurred since time immemorial and far from human observance. It isa simple story, and one likely to appeal to young children.Mrs. Tittlemouse is a "most terribly tidy little mouse alwayssweeping and dusting the soft sandy floors" in the "yards andyards" of passages and storerooms, nut-cellars, and seed-cellars inher "funny house" amongst the roots of a hedge. She has a kitchen,a parlour, a pantry, a larder, and a bedroom where she keeps herdust-pan and brush next to her little box bed. She tries to keepher house tidy, but insect intruders leave dirty footprints on thefloors and all sorts of messes about the place.A beetle is shooed away, a ladybird is exorcised with "Fly awayhome! Your house is on fire!", and a spider inquiring after MissMuffet is turned away with little ceremony. In a distant passage,Mrs. Tittlemouse meets Babbitty Bumble, a bumble bee who has takenup residence with three or four other bees in one of the emptystorerooms. Mrs. Tittlemouse tries to pull out their nest but theybuzz fiercely at her, and she retreats to deal with the matterafter dinner.In her parlour, she finds her toad neighbour Mr. Jackson sittingbefore the fire in her rocking chair. Mr. Jackson lives in "a drainbelow the hedge, in a very dirty wet ditch". His coat tails dripwith water and he leaves wet footmarks on Mrs. Tittlemouse'sparlour floor. She follows him about with a mop and dish-cloth.Mrs. Tittlemouse allows Mr. Jackson to stay for dinner, but thefood is not to his pleasing, and he rummages about the cupboardsearching for the honey he can smell. He discovers a butterfly inthe sugar bowl, but when he finds the bees, he makes a big messpulling out their nest. Mrs. Tittlemouse fears she "shall godistracted" as a result of the turmoil and takes refuge in thenut-cellar. When she finally ventures forth, she discoverseverybody has left but her house is a mess. She takes some moss,beeswax, and twigs to partly close up her front door to keep Mr.Jackson out. Exhausted, she goes to bed wondering if her house willever be tidy again.The fastidious little mouse spends a fortnight spring cleaning.She rubs the furniture with beeswax and polishes her little tinspoons, then holds a party for five other little wood-mice wearingtheir Regency finery. Mr. Jackson attends but is forced to sitoutside because Mrs. Tittlemouse has narrowed her door. He takes nooffence at being excluded from the parlour. Acorn-cupfuls ofhoneydew are passed through the window to him and he toasts Mrs.Tittlemouse's good health.
